Can the accuracy of a used drill-tapping machine be restored later?

Compensable Errors:

Backlash: Caused by long-term wear of the lead screw and nut. This is the easiest precision problem to repair, usually significantly improved by parameter compensation within the CNC system at very low cost.

Positioning Accuracy: Also detectable using a professional laser interferometer, with pitch error compensation within the system effectively restoring most positioning accuracy.

Errors Requiring Repair/Replacement:

Geometric Accuracy: Such as the straightness and flatness of the guide rails, and the levelness of the worktable. If the guide rails are worn or deformed, repair requires scraping, a highly technical, time-consuming, and expensive process.

Spindle Accuracy: Radial and axial runout of the spindle under high-speed rotation is critical. If the bearings are worn, it can be restored by replacing them with high-precision spindle bearings and readjusting the preload. However, if the spindle itself is worn or has experienced severe thermal expansion, the entire spindle may need to be sent back to the original manufacturer or a specialized facility for overhaul or replacement, which is one of the most expensive aspects.

Irreversible Damage:

Basic Component Damage: If the basic castings such as the bed and column develop cracks or permanent deformation due to impact or stress release, accuracy restoration will be extremely difficult and may even be economically unfeasible.

II. Main Techniques and Methods for Accuracy Restoration
**Inspection First:** A comprehensive inspection of the used drill-tapping machine must be performed using specialized instruments (such as laser interferometers and ballbars) to accurately quantify various accuracy errors. This is the basis for developing a repair plan.

Mechanical Repair:

Lead Screws and Guide Rails: Worn ball screws can be reground and fitted with new nuts, or the screw can be replaced entirely. Linear guide rails are usually replaced directly with new ones.

Spindle Repair: As mentioned earlier, this involves replacing bearings, dynamic balancing, and even replacing the entire spindle unit.

System Compensation: After completing the repair and adjustment of the mechanical parts, data is measured using a laser interferometer, and compensation values are input into the CNC system. This is the final and crucial step in achieving high precision.
