Five questions you care about most regarding used CNC lathes

Question 1: Can the accuracy of a used CNC lathe be guaranteed?

Answer: Yes, but under certain conditions. Accuracy depends on the machine's wear condition and the level of adjustment. A rigorous trial cut test (see the first article) can provide a direct assessment of its current accuracy. In most cases, positioning accuracy can be restored by adjusting the lead screw backlash and modifying the system pitch compensation parameters. However, if basic geometric accuracy (such as guideway straightness) is severely lost, the repair cost is extremely high, and such equipment should be avoided.

Question 2: What if the CNC system is outdated? Will it be impossible to program?

Answer: For common systems like FANUC and Siemens, the core components of their basic programming language (G-code) have remained largely unchanged over the years. The user interface may be old-fashioned, but the functions fully meet routine machining needs. More importantly, system stability is often proven over time. If functional updates (such as USB transfer) are indeed needed, this can be achieved by adding external DNC software or a simple nesting system, at a low cost.

Question 3: Will subsequent maintenance be troublesome, and are spare parts easy to find?

Answer: This is a core concern. Prioritize mainstream brands and models (those with large market share), as their common parts and wear components (such as bearings, lead screws, and servo motors) are relatively readily available. When purchasing, check if there is technical service support for the brand locally or online. Establishing contact with a reliable repair technician is more important than stockpiling spare parts.

Question 4: Will the energy consumption be high if the equipment is too old?

Answer: Compared to the latest variable frequency energy-saving models, older equipment, such as the spindle motor, may have slightly higher energy consumption. However, considering the huge purchase price difference, this difference in electricity costs often takes many years to balance. Furthermore, the main energy consumption is due to the load during processing; the difference is not significant under no-load conditions. For energy saving, focus on the reasonable arrangement of production plans to reduce equipment idling.

Question 5: Which channels are more reliable for purchasing?

Answer: Here are a few recommended channels: 1. Professional used equipment dealers: They provide screening, refurbishment, and warranty services. Although their prices are higher than private sales, they offer greater assurance. 2. Direct factory transfer: Prices may be better, and you can learn about the firsthand usage history, but you need strong judgment. 3. Reliable online auction/trading platforms: Information is transparent, but you must insist on on-site inspection. Regardless of the channel, "seeing with your own eyes and personally testing the cut" is an inviolable principle.
