Return on investment of used five axis machining centers

Any major equipment investment by a company must ultimately be verified for its correctness through clear financial data. What are the advantages of choosing a used five-axis machining center in terms of return on investment (ROI) compared to purchasing a new machine? We can conduct quantitative analysis through a simplified model.

Assumption scenario: A company plans to add five axis machining capability for processing medium-sized precision molds and aerospace structural components. A brand new mid-range five axis machine tool costs about 3.5 million yuan. A second-hand equipment of the same grade with a machine age of 5-8 years and good condition has a market price of about 1.5 million yuan.

1. Initial investment savings:

Only equipment procurement can directly save cash expenditure of 2 million yuan. This does not include the additional shipping costs, high installation and commissioning fees, and possible basic renovation costs that are usually required for new machines.

2. Depreciation and cash flow impact: Calculated based on 10-year straight-line depreciation, the annual depreciation cost of new equipment is 350000 yuan, and the annual depreciation cost of second-hand equipment (based on purchase price) is 150000 yuan, resulting in a direct increase of pre tax profit of 200000 yuan per year. More importantly, the saved 2 million cash has become healthy working capital that can be used for other revenue generating activities.

3. Production speed and opportunity benefits: The new machine may take up to 6-12 months from ordering, delivery to installation and commissioning completion. And for a second-hand equipment that has arrived in stock, the debugging cycle can be compressed to within 1-2 months. This advanced production time of at least 4 months, assuming that the equipment can generate a gross profit of 200000 yuan per month, is equivalent to obtaining an opportunity profit of 800000 yuan in advance.

4. Comprehensive ROI calculation (simplified version):

New machine: The total investment is about 3.5 million, assuming an annual net income (excluding depreciation, interest, etc.) of 700000, and a simple payback period of about 5 years.

Second hand equipment: The total investment is 1.5 million yuan. Due to early production and low depreciation costs, the annual net income can reach 600000 yuan (only slightly lower than new machines, due to similar processing efficiency), and the simple payback period is shortened to about 2.5 years.

From this, it can be seen that purchasing used five axis machining centers not only shortens the investment payback period by half, but also enables enterprises to achieve the same level of production capacity with a lighter asset burden. After calculating this account, its financial superiority is self-evident. Of course, the premise of all of this is that the purchased second-hand equipment must be stable and reliable, avoiding production losses caused by frequent failures, which highlights the extreme importance of professional evaluation and reliable channels.
