How to maintain a used angle grinder?

A used angle grinder is a powerful and versatile tool, but its high speed and harsh working environment also mean it requires meticulous maintenance. Proper maintenance not only ensures work efficiency but also directly affects your personal safety. The following are detailed maintenance recommendations:

1. Daily Basic Maintenance (After Each Use)

This is the most important and often overlooked step and should be performed after the tool has cooled.

Cleaning and Dust Removal: Immediately unplug the power cord or remove the battery after use. Use dry compressed air or a soft-bristled brush to thoroughly remove metal shavings and dust from the tool body. Focus on cleaning the cooling vents to prevent damage to the motor due to overheating and blockage. Never use liquids or solvents to rinse directly.

Inspecting the Grinding Wheel: Visually inspect the grinding wheel for cracks, damage, or severe wear. Any defective wheels must be replaced immediately; cracked grinding wheels rotating at high speeds are extremely dangerous.

Inspecting the Power Cord and Plug: For corded angle grinders, inspect the cable for tears and cuts, and ensure the plug is intact. For battery-powered models, inspect the battery contacts for cleanliness and deformation.

2. Regular Deep Maintenance (Monthly or Quarterly, depending on frequency of use)

Inspecting and Replacing the Carbon Brushes: These are the "heart" of the motor. Remove the carbon brush cover from the tool body and check the length of the carbon brushes. When worn to 1/3 of their original length or below the manufacturer's marking, they must be replaced in pairs. Exhausted carbon brushes can damage the motor rotor.

Transmission Component Lubrication: Angle grinder gearboxes typically use long-life grease, which generally does not require additional lubrication. However, if disassembly has been performed or if unusual rotational noise is detected, the gearbox should be inspected and replaced with a professionally designated grease. Do not use ordinary butter.

Internal Cleaning and Inspection: Experienced users can regularly disassemble the housing and carefully clean the interior with compressed air to remove carbon deposits and dust. Also, inspect the rotor for blue marks, indicating overheating, and ensure that internal cable connections are secure.

Accessory and Locking Mechanism Inspection: Check the grinding wheel pressure flange for flatness and wear. Ensure the spindle lock button or self-locking shaft is functioning properly and securely locks the spindle for loading and unloading the grinding wheel.

III. Good Habits During Use (Preventive Maintenance)

Load Matching: Avoid overloading low-power angle grinders for extended periods. Reduce pressure if you hear a dull sound from the motor or notice a significant drop in speed.

Avoid impact and moisture: Handle with care and avoid strong impact. Do not use in humid or explosive environments.

Properly install accessories: Ensure the specifications of the grinding wheel, cutting disc, or wire wheel match the angle grinder, and install it correctly according to the manual. Use the corresponding protective cover.
